GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has announced that the company has agreed to pay £849 million in damages to the manufacturer in the UK, the New Zealand company announced today.
GSK’s acquisition of GSK’s manufacturing facility in South Australia in 2009 brought the company’s sales of around 1.4 million doses of Acyclovir tablets to around $2.3 billion, according to the company’s statement.
“GlaxoSmithKline’s acquisition of GSK’s manufacturing facility in South Australia represents the largest acquisition in the history of the UK pharmaceutical industry,” GSK said in a statement.
“It is our intention to maintain the level of quality control in the UK and to provide GSK with a product portfolio of UK tablets that is in line with the quality standards in the US. We also intend to provide GSK with a portfolio of GSK tablets that we believe meets the highest standards in the US,” the statement read.
The company’s announcement was made after the company’s CEO was approached and was referred to as GSK’s president. GSK will take the company’s majority control of the manufacturing facility for a period of three years.
The company also announced that it has received financial support from the United States Department of Justice and the New Zealand Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Authority (MHRA) for the compensation it will receive if the company can get it to do so. GSK’s statement was released on Wednesday.
A generic version of Zovirax antiviral cream will be available by the end of the year. The generic version is expected to be available in pharmacies in the UK and in the USA.
GSK also announced a “P” for the price of the generic version of Zovirax, which is expected to be available to patients over the counter in the US from November 25.
GSK’s statement follows its earlier announcement by the company that it will be co-operating with the FDA to investigate whether it is more profitable than the branded version of Zovirax.
GSK’s announcement came as a shock to several patients and doctors who have been told by the company that their treatment plans are still not working as hoped after all, although they are still taking the drug, which is currently only available to patients in the USA.
“The availability of generic Zovirax and the cost of the generic Zovirax are very similar. The only difference is that the generic Zovirax is a branded drug that is now available in the US.
